Do you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

'explorer_2006_0055.jpg' photo (c) 2006, Will Brown - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/EDIT: Within a few minutes of publishing this post, I received some great input from contacts on LinkedIn and Google+, as well as by Skype, email and the comments below. Thanks to each of you! I have now updated this post to reflect your suggestions, rather than have two versions floating around. So while you will now actually be reading my second draft, please still feel free to add any suggestions; I’m more than happy to write a third!

____________

I have been asked to speak at a local high school tomorrow for their Career Day. My topic… being an entrepreneur. Looking forward to it; I always enjoy giving a presentation, and the realities of being an entrepreneur definitely hit home for me, since I’ve been one since 1989.

As I’ve been getting ready, the following just kind of fell into place. This is obviously not meant to be all-inclusive; I’m just trying to give them a more rounded understanding of things to consider about being an entrepreneur.

Knowing me, I’ll change this 300 times between now and tomorrow morning, but here’s my first second draft, spelling crimes and all. I’d love your thoughts on this, especially if you’ve been down the entrepreneurial path… [Read more...]

How social media and the Internet improve life in Romania and here.

'Turda Gorges, Romania 2008' photo (c) 2008, Codrin Bucur - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/We are all unique. We are all the same.

Every country has its own unique challenges, yet it is striking how similar our struggles can be from community to community, country to country, and even continent to continent. The more we recognize those similarities, the better we can apply solutions that worked in one area to others. What’s happening in Romania right now is a prime example.

Paul-Andre Baran is Romania’s new Director of Biblionet, a five-year program to facilitate free access to information for Romanian citizens by fostering the development of a modern public library system in Romania. He was recently interviewed by Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission, about recent programs that have improved life for families — and women in particular — in rural Romania. Poverty is rampant in these areas, with Internet access — or even computers — simply not being available in many homes. In fact, only 50% of Romania’s population is online. To combat these challenges, local libraries were set up to be the digital hubs of their communities, and the program has been changing lives and altering centuries-old perceptions: [Read more...]

What’s Love got to do with Blogging?

'sweet, comic Valentine' photo (c) 2008, Luca Vanzella - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/Are you in love? In a serious, long-term relationship? Tough, ain’t it!

You’re either nodding your heart in agreement or completely offended by that comment. Of course it’s not tough when it’s going well. Nothing on Earth could possibly be sweeter than being in love and being loved in return.

But hey, the truth is in any long-term relationship there will come a few days, sooner or later, when it’s not quite as sweet as you’d like it to be. Those are the days when your relationship can see its finest moments. You dig deep to find all that’s good and true in yourself, and to help bring it out in your partner. [Read more...]

Getting started on Twitter: Your very, very first steps.

'baby steps' photo (c) 2007, pudgeefeet - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/You’ve been hearing about Twitter for a long time now, and you’re thinking it’s finally time to make the leap. Maybe someone has suggested you should be there for business. Maybe you want to become good buddies with Ashton Kutcher. Or maybe you’re just curious. But it all seems like a bit too much to take on by yourself. You hardly even know what Twitter is, let alone how to sign up for it. If that sounds like you, you’re in the right spot. By the end of this post, you’ll not only know the basics, you’ll have your very own working Twitter account. [Read more...]

Should Leonard Cohen write your next blog post?

'Leonard Cohen' photo (c) 2009, Hollywata - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/Hallelujah! Imagine if one of the most gifted poets and songwriters of our time were to drop by to help you craft a few words. Together you’d wring emotions out of a weary soul, warm up some long-forgotten heartsong, and write a post poetic and inspiring beyond anything you ever knew you had hidden inside.

Yeah. He’s not coming. Or if he is, he didn’t tell me. But don’t despair. Leonard has a message for you that should help you plumb those darkest depths of your unfulfilled talents. [Read more...]

Is creativity getting old? Or are you?

'March 14' photo (c) 2011, Chad and Kellye - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/I read an interview with Steven Spielberg years ago that asked the reason for his incredible success. His reply was surprisingly simple: he had never lost his sense of childlike wonder. He could still be excited by a haunted house or thrilled by the idea of a dinosaur.

If hanging on to our childhood is the secret to creativity, how do you rate?

When we were young we often expected more of ourselves and demanded more of others. We had a vision of what we wanted to be, and to meet it we set our own standards of acceptable conduct. No fries except on Saturday; no wearing out-of-style clothes even when you’re just hanging out with friends. But then everyone aged and along the way, some things changed. We became more mature and realized that beauty was “not as important” as it once seemed. Our ideals were no longer seen to be practical, and high standards no longer realistic. As Dan Hill used to sing, “Freedom takes on new meaning when you’ve got a family of five.”

But in reality, did the ideals become less practical, or did we just become less idealistic? Did we become wiser or did we become lazy? [Read more...]

Marriage proposals, basketball, Lego and social media. A good idea?

A marriage proposal by Lego may be much more strategic than proposing at a basketball game. There aren’t many moments in life more notable — and either more fantastically rewarding or mercilessly soul crushing — than the marriage proposal. It’s a time when you want everything to be just right, in the hope of getting the perfect answer. So the last thing anyone would ever want to do would be to add elements that would make it more likely to end in disaster. Or so you’d think. [Read more...]

5 ways to make your New Year’s Resolutions stick!

'Fireworks' photo (c) 2006, Chris - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/I’m a fan of New Year’s Resolutions, whether for marketing a small business or being a Dad or just staying healthy. I like the idea of trying to be better. So it’s always a bit disappointing when the topic comes up, and 90% of the people in the room say they don’t even bother making resolutions any more.

Whether you make resolutions or not, it’s never too late to try, and to revisit ones that have drifted and get them back on track. Here are five ways to make New Year’s Resolutions, and make ‘em stick! [Read more...]

Your marketing sucks? Make sure it’s all your fault.

'Point!' photo (c) 2007, a2gemma - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/Like the rest of us, you probably hate to be blamed. For anything. If something goes wrong, you’re thinking “I didn’t do that!” That’s normal. But what’s easy to miss when there’s trouble is that it’s often best when it is your fault.

Whether in business or at home, being at fault for big failures is of course no fun. Investors have nothing nice to say. Your kids pretend they don’t know you. For Sale signs appear on your neighbors’ lawn. Or yours. But if you really want to fix your problems rather than just avoid some blame, there’s nothing better than knowing that you’re the one at fault, because then you can figure out precisely what went wrong, and can better make the changes you need.

Let’s face some facts: [Read more...]

Why social media isn’t getting you a job.

'job search legal pad.jpeg' photo (c) 2010, Angela Archer - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.0/Social media is useless for finding work.

I’ve spent days and days on Twitter trying to talk to all sorts of people, and they either don’t answer or just don’t want to help.

I’ve had my resume up on LinkedIn for months, and not one person has even asked for an interview.

Social media can be fun, but it’s no way to get a job.

It’ll never work for me. I suck at social media.

If you’ve heard any of those thoughts floating around your head lately, it’s time to toss them out. Social media can indeed help you find work, but like anything in life, you’ve got to do things well if you want to see results.

Here are three reasons social media isn’t getting you a job yet, and how to turn things around: [Read more...]
